1 Machu Picchu Peru, South America We are grateful for these photos shared with the Hawaiian Civic Club of Wahiawā by Kehaulani Kupihea. Mahalo nui loa. Her friend, photographer Lorenzo Nefulda, visited the sacred sites of Machu Picchu in Peru, South America in the year He took these great shots below of their pōhaku. Machu Picchu was built in the 1400 s by the Inca. It is amazing that the Inca studied the stars using the same tools as the kahuna of Kūkaniloko. During the same time period, our Ali i born at Kūkaniloko were taught the skills of navigation through movement of the stars above. Similarity in the diamond shaped compass stone is remarkable. According to the guide, the Incas filled a bowl, formed within the pōhaku, with water. Like the kahuna, they waited for the stars and constellations to pass overhead in order to teach through star reflections in the water. Diamond Stone Compass Machu Picchu Compass Alignment Pōhaku with bowl to fill with water to study star movements Diamond Stone Compass Kūkaniloko Compass Alignment Dr. Kyselka s CONCLUSION: From a quick glance we can say that Ku-kani-loko is no Stonehenge. Perhaps some of its stones were bright from long distances, but there are no obvious sighting portals. However, we have not studied the site intensively. Because of its intriguing placement relative to Mt. Kaala it is imperative that this site retain its vistas of the Waianae and Koolau. Intensive study may reveal aspects of Ku-kani-loko that we do not presently see. University of Hawai i s Dr. Will Kyselka, author of Preliminary Thoughts on Kūkaniloko February 1993, did an extensive study on the pōhaku of Kūkaniloko. He asked questions such as Why this site? Might a combination of geographic features and astronomic events have determined it? Is Ku-kani-loko Hawaii s Stonehenge? Photos on the left are of some of his studies. A piece of string was stretched from one ridge to another over the center of the piko (Diamond Stone) and compared to the compass lying beneath it. It was found to be five degrees east of magnetic north. Our pōhaku with the bowl within used in the same manner as the Incas with water to study the stars, lays on its side at Kūkaniloko as it was toppled by vandals many years ago. A copy of the draft of Preliminary Thoughts on Kūkaniloko by Dr. Will Kyselka, February 1993, is included in the Documents of Interest on our website. You will find us at Kūkaniloko.org or Page1
